This word “catholic” does not relate to the Roman Catholic Church in any way but means “universal” – in other words, James addressed a widely dispersed audience of Christians, rather than any individuals or even a particular church or group of churches. First, however, let's take a look at the background and setting of this wonderful book.Ī “general” epistle - The Epistle of James, like 1 st and 2 nd Peter, 1 st John and Jude, is a so-called “catholic” or “general” epistle (letter) of the New Testament. As we go through the book over the next week or so, we will explain and unpack t he controversy, which unfortunately still exists today in far too many circles. Interestingly, the letter has also been a source of c ontroversy at various points in the history of the Church since the 1st century. The Letter of James is a captivating and fascinating document of the very early Church.
